(Washington, DC) ‒ SmarterSafer.org today released a statement following Alabama State Legislature’s passage of the Strengthen Alabama Homes Act, which will create a fund to assist coastal homeowners with retrofitting their homes against hurricanes:
“Mitigation efforts like the Strengthen Alabama Homes Act help keep our communities safer and save valuable taxpayer dollars. The bill encourages mitigation of risk by retrofitting coastal homes, which is critical to reducing the impact of severe storms. We commend the Alabama Legislature for helping to strengthen and protect properties in hurricane-prone areas and working to protect their taxpayers from borrowing millions of dollars the next time a severe weather event occurs.”
The Strengthen Alabama Homes Act (SB389) was the result of a coastal-recovery commission set up last summer. Under the bill, funds will be deposited into the Strengthen Alabama Homes program that will be housed in the state’s insurance department—and those funds will not be allowed to be moved out of the fund into the general treasury.
SmarterSafer.org is a national coalition made up of a diverse set of voices united to support environmentally-responsible, fiscally-sound approaches that promote public safety. The Coalition strongly opposes legislative proposals that encourage people to build homes in hurricane-prone, environmentally-sensitive areas by creating new programs that directly or indirectly subsidize their homeowner’s insurance.
