Applauds Sen. Inhofe’s Disaster Preparation Bill

WASHINGTON – – a coalition of taxpayer advocates, environmental groups, insurers, and mitigation and housing organizations – today expressed support for Senator Jim Inhofe’s Disaster Savings Accounts bill. The legislation would establish tax-preferred savings accounts, allowing Americans to put aside up to $5,000 annually to cover costs related to disaster mitigation and preparedness. SmarterSafer said in a statement:

“By empowering individuals to find cost-effective ways to plan for natural disasters, Sen. Inhofe’s bill, along with Rep. Dennis Ross’s bill in the House, will ease the burden on federal disaster aid and save taxpayers money. Disaster mitigation protects lives and property, and significantly lowers the cost of disasters. This bill is a strong step in the right direction and we applaud Sen. Inhofe for his novel approach.”
